Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Mrs Jo Bennison, SENDco, Nasenco award April 2020
SEND at Staveley Community Primary School
We respect all of our children as individuals, and are committed to meeting the individual and unique needs of every child with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We aim to achieve this by working in partnership with families, to ensure we are making effective use of adjustments as needed to maximise their child's access to teaching and learning. We also continually revisit, research and review our practice to ensure it is the best it can be.
Further information about our SEND provision can be found in our SEND policy, Information report and Accessibility plan below.
If you have any queries or concerns about SEND provision, please contact our school SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator), Mrs Bennison, via the school office (admin@staveley.n-yorks.sch.uk, 01423 340338).

Broad Areas of Need
Cognition and Learning
Cognition and learning difficulties encompass a wide range of needs, including moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and severe learning difficulties (SLD), where children and young people are likely to need support in all areas of the curriculum as well as having associated difficulties with mobility and communication. Profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) refer to severe and complex learning difficulties as well as a significant physical disability or sensory impairment.
This area of SEND also includes specific learning difficulties and differences (SpLD). Specific learning difficulties and differences (SpLD) can affect one or more specific aspects of learning and encompasses a range of conditions such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia (known as Developmental Co-ordination Disorder). Neurodiversity is a term increasingly being used to describe the differences in learning such young people experience.
Your child may:
- learn at a slower pace than others their age
- find it difficult to understanding some lessons or subjects
- struggle with organisation and memory skills
- have a specific difficulty affecting one particular part of their learning performance such as in literacy or numeracy
Communication and Interaction
Children with communication and interaction needs may have difficulty in expressing themselves, in understanding language, and with interacting with others and the world around them.
Your child may:
- find it difficult to understand and process language
- struggle with the use of spoken language or nonverbal communication
- have difficulties with social interaction
- have speech sound difficulties
Social, Emotional and Mental Health
Some children and young people experience difficulties in mental health and emotional wellbeing. These needs may show themselves as challenging behaviour, distress or be well hidden. Social, emotional and mental health is an overarching term used to describe actions that promote resilience and wellbeing as well as describing children who demonstrate difficulties with emotional regulation or social interaction or are experiencing mental health conditions.
Your child may:
- find it difficult to understand and manage their own feelings
- feel withdrawn or unhappy
- struggle to manage relationships with others
- find it challenging to follow instructions
- may struggle with my behaviour
Sensory and Physical
This category of SEND describes the needs of children and young people with vision and/or hearing impairments, physical needs that mean they have additional ongoing support and equipment, and those children with medical needs that affect their ability to access school.
Your child may have a:
- hearing loss ranging from mild to profound
- visual impairment ranging from mild to profound
- multi-sensory impairment of both hearing and visual loss
- sensory processing difficulty
- physical difficulty that requires additional ongoing support and equipment
